   Who are homeless Veterans? How many? Why are Veterans Homeless?

Informationon from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) made a statement the bulk of homeless Veterans are males are male, and female Veterans make the up the last 9%. Most are single, but not all, they tend to live in urban areas. Boundaries to housing are many, mental illness and co-occurring disorders like , PTSD, alcohol and other forms of substance abuse.

 

While the United states spends millions on training military personnel to deploy into harms way, they spend little to no money or time invested into those same people who will need to reintegrate into society and family life once they reach the end of their obligated service to the country.

 

Approximately 45% of all homeless Veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 10.4% and 3.4% respectively of the current U.S. Veteran population.

Accurate counts are  not possible due to the transient nature of homeless populations presents a major difficulty – the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 40,056 veterans are homeless on any given night.
